Segue a discussão:

EP - Sobre o RJ:
- Passagem R$ 2,50;

- Integração entre linhas de onibus: NÃO;
- Integração entre metrô, onibus e barcas: NÃO;

- Total: R$ 7,50;
- Tempo: 2h+;

Fica lá sentando, enchendo o saco do prefeito.

Gostei bastante do texto dessa menina!

Ela tá movimentando a cidade.

E pra fechar meu ponto.

LERAM?

An opinion on the rise and fall of file systems APIs.

In the dawn of operating systems, there was a need to design a hardware and data structures to store persistent information generated (or used) by user programs. We know the rest of the story: tapes, floppy disks, hard-drives and now solid states, always driven by the OS’s file system implementation over the I/O driver API.

Files and directories/folders, organized as a hierarchical trees (or directed graphs, if you consider links/shortcuts) were designed as an analogy to the file cabinets in offices of that time. This structure fundamentally never changed, and features such asynchronous writes, extensible meta-data, journaling or anti-fragmentation block sharing, were developed basically to increase performance and reliability.

All operating systems flavors always exposed file systems both as an API (for programmers) and through the (in)famous shell application (directly to users, programmers or not). The change from shells to visual file explorers can be seen as a natural consequence of a change in the perception of who was the REAL target audience of personal computers: non-programming users…

Initially computers came with only basic software: OS + file system + process management, a shell, and a programming language compiler, so the “user” could develop programs to automate his/hers personal tasks and help solving problems. Sometime during the late seventies/early eighties, the success of local software houses showed the existence of a huge market for off-the-shelf software products. The visual desktop (MacOS, Windows, Unix’s X window managers) was designed to resemble a real working desk, but there, somewhere in the corner of the room, the file cabinet analogy persisted.

However, criticism always existed, and together proposals for getting rid of this analogy: David Gelernter’s Life Streams were based on the perception (I’m not convinced of this) that humans organize their life experience as a timeline, and proposed to organize information (aka fine grained file objects) this way. This project never took of, but it’s an interesting read anyway. User interface super star Jacob Nielsen even proposed a nerd-friendly interface to replace the desktop analogy: Anti-mac interface. I think both ideas really missed the point.

What actually happens is that files are not really important, data is not the key concept to our daily lives, but processes are. This means that file system interfaces are a bit like XML, a very good machine-readable format, but an awful interface to be directly exposed to the users. However, our digital lives were always dominated by the applications we use to help us with daily tasks: writing texts, listening to music, etc.

Evidence to show this importance is everywhere:

Most of non-technical users I know always use the recently-opened documents list, or even open the application first, and looks for the document through the “Open File” explorer interface;

Most mac users don’t even know where their music files are, since it is much easier just to open iTunes and use its context-designed interface based on music meta-data such as artist, record, etc;

Have you ever felt the need to know where are the Google Docs files stored? Me neither…:)

Based on this, I now completely understand Apple’s strategy of not exposing a file system interface to their iOS devices. The same happens to Google Docs and this analysis of their strategy for G+. In both cases, there are options to import/export “normal” files (through iTunes, and upload/download in case of gDocs), so there can be a smooth transition from the “old” paradigm. These options might always exist (even if only through hacks), since power users always want more control, but the thing is that for most users, dealing with files is not necessary at all.

I’d like to hear from anybody if you have evidence to the contrary (or supporting it). Now that cloud services are so much in evidence, is the normal user finally get rid of the FILE?

And please, I’m not defending Apple’s or Google’s policy in general, just observing a tendency in how people organize their personal content.

A short opinion piece.

There’s much discussion about Google+ placement and strategy, specially when compared to facebook and twitter. I think many people just missed the point and I suggest checking this analysis to understand the grand design. It’s a very strong strategy to take the power from the Desktop OS after decades.

One question is fundamental in this matter: given that facebook’s news feed (status updates) is closed (you can’t read it from outside facebook’s interface, mashups are restricted to: like, follow, comments), some might say that being G+ open to any mashup the problem is solved. But there’s another problem: people has already stopped using email (in favor of FB’s personal messages), and most people don’t produce content (basically posts links to content they like).

So where does all this content (that we post as links) comes from? Blogs, news portals and the like. But apart from some personal bookmarks (mental or not), everybody looks for interesting content by using a search engine (or news feed search engine). So it is FUNDAMENTAL that the popular search engines remain unbiased.

Imagine if FB, releases a search engine from inside their interface. Do you think they’ll be as open as Google in separating real search results from ads (I honestly don’t know)? And what can be the implications to freedom of speech and the role of the press? Who governs how FB (or Google) filters the way we find content?

I decided to write this because after joining FB, and more recently G+, I was wondering if I still needed this site/blog. Then I remembered that I still need to keep resources to my students, and after that I decided that it is important to keep content distributed through different providers (google, wordpress, fb, twitter, and others) since it’s the competition which, in the end, might help us avoid the Orwellian society nightmare.

This one is for the nerds, naive and passionate about technology. It’s just something to remember. A snapshot of a time when the term hacker was still used to referring people who just loved knowing how stuff works, and not the headless bankers of today.

I remember the dawn of public internet in Brazil. It was early 1996 when I signed up as the 5th user of a local ISP in Fortaleza-CE (Roadnet was its name). At that time, everything was nerdy and amazing (a bit naive as well). To grok C, makefiles, TCP/IP, telnet, ssh, ftp and other underlying technical foundations was something to brag about, and somehow a consequence of the love we all had for the new star OS: Linux…

The first time I had contact with Linux was also in 1996. My uncle “Sizoca” presented me me a CD with the Slackware 3.0 distro. I remember the stable kernel that came with it was 1.2.13, and 1.3.18 the beta one. Early days yet indeed…:) Me and friends Mateus and Carlos spent all night long trying to do a very careful install, custom designed to fit all of Mateus’s PC specs. Madly enough, we read every package description before opting to install it or not.

It was around 4pm when we started to configure the custom kernel compilation. Manually choosing which drivers (and their options) to include for network, sound and other hardware adapters was exciting, and used to give us the sensation that our fine-tunned kernel would give us blazing speed, exploiting all of the available BOGOMIPS power of the underlying machine. That was before the popularization of loadable kernel modules, which basically rendered custom kernel compilation unnecessary for future distros/installs.

Following the boot-up process was mind-blowing. I remember somebody commenting this: “do you know why there are so many strange messages during the boot process? It’s because Linux is actually using all of your computer resources, instead of hiding this from you”. Lol, one can argue that the comment is not actually true, but it is funny to see how a technology can make someone passionate about it.

Accessing the internet with your carefully configured Linux box used to give you that felling of safety and power over the mere mortals. Even if it was impossible to use WinModems (ruim-modems, as we used to say in portuguese), creating shell scripts to automate the dial-up process was a pleasure, in the same way planning a play as a child was much better then playing it itself. Doing it from a Linux-powered (by hand, not factory default as crappy netbooks of today) was even better.

Things I remember and miss (more or less):

BitchX

Lynx

Doom

XF86Config

make xconfig

the “./configure – make – make install” loop

man pages

The Enlightenment Window Manager

Did I forget anything important? I’ll finish with a personal opinion:

Now that Linux is pretty much consolidated in the server and embedded (mobile included) market. However, I still think it haven’t (and never will) got a place in the ordinary user Desktop. Given that Linux’s future is well secured because of its relevance in the server/embedded/mobile space, why waste energy trying to convince people to use it in the Desktop? Nerds still love to have something to call their own, and theirs only…:)

This is the main research project I’ve been collaborating with during my stay at the MIT Media Lab. It’s the design of an optical device, plus a series of interaction techniques, which for instance can be devised in a smart phone, to detect and map cataract spots in the human eye. There’re many interesting aspects of this work, but the most important contributions to the scientific community are:

A co-design of optics and interactive software. Collimated beams of light scan through sub-apertures of the crystallin lens in order to screen for cataract opacities. There are no moving parts, to increase safety and accuracy of the technique, and the device can be composed of a smart phone with a clip-on attachment.

Four interactive methods to assess size, position, contrast and point-spread function (PSF) of cataracts in the human eye. There’s no need for a trained clinician since the interaction if very simple and based on straightforward visual tasks. These methods can also be used to detect opacities in other types of optical systems such as camera lenses.

A rendering module that simulates the vision of a cataract-affected eye, based on the real data extracted from the test on an individual. This image-based simulated rendering takes into account physical phenomena such as diffraction and depth-of-field, based on detailed eye parameters such as accommodation, pupil size, and the maps generated by our device in a cataract screening test.

We’ve got a paper accepted for SIGGRAPH ’11 describing the device, the interactive techniques, the simulated rendering, and also showing the results of our evaluations. From the paper abstract:

“We introduce a novel interactive method to assess cataracts in the human eye by crafting an optical solution that measures the perceptual impact of forward scattering on the foveal region. Current solutions rely on highly-trained clinicians to check the back scattering in the crystallin lens and test their predictions on visual acuity tests. Close-range parallax barriers create collimated beams of light to scan through sub-apertures scattering light as it strikes a cataract. User feedback generates maps for opacity, attenuation, contrast and local point-spread functions. The goal is to allow a general audience to operate a portable high-contrast light-field display to gain a meaningful understanding of their own visual conditions. The compiled maps are used to reconstruct the cataract-affected view of an individual, offering a unique approach for capturing information for screening, diagnostic, and clinical analysis.“

Now it’s time to talk about the things that didn’t work so well:

File sharing: Yeah, I told that this worked quite well, but we also had our hustles with it. First, we were sharing files with 6 people through Dropbox, and some of them had reached their space limit. Having to delete things in a rush in order to have a new rendered paper updated is not the safest thing one can do. Second, although we used version control for the paper itself, we didn’t want to deal with merging and conflict resolution on Latex files, especially at 4am on deadline’s eve. So, we decided to use a “token” for some of the files, which was a bit messy sometimes. Next time I’ll make sure we use a locking mechanism or a better communication schedule.

Communication: although we coordinated things quite well during the process, some things could’ve worked better. First, the mail server of one of our collaborators from abroad stopped working close to the deadline, leaving him almost “isolated” during the last 10 hours. Second, next time I’d make sure we schedule more group meetings through instant messengers, as those greatly improved the overall organization.

Prototype building. Although we had some design and building skills, our prototypes could be greatly improved if we had somebody with more experience in hardware dedicated to that task. Our sub-group comprised mostly of computer scientists, which is quite unusual in the camera culture group (most people are engineers or physicists). In the end we had nice prototypes, and the issues we had with technology were all detailed in the limitations section of the paper, but this is something we can still improve.

Of course there are more details, but I really can’t share them at this moment because they are related to the research subject. To finish, I’d like to acknowledge our team and some others who collaborated with the project: Vitor Pamplona, Jan Zizka, Everett Lawson, Ramesh Raskar, Manoel Oliveira and Esteban Clua were directly involved with the project and paper; Pedro Thiago created nice 3d renders to illustrate some concepts, Cintia Bartz was photographed and filmed using the prototypes, which is included both in the paper and as extra material sent to the reviewers; Taya Leary for keeping our lab area full of food all the time; Andy, Doug, Abhi and the others from the Camera Culture group for the comments and the great time we had this season.

Yesterday was ACM Siggraph‘s deadline for technical papers. Since mid-november I’ve been working on two research projects here at the MIT Media Lab‘s Camera Culture group, eventually expecting to write papers about them during this period, known to us as “Siggraph Season”. One of the projects eventually took off and we were able to finish a nice paper in time, which we hope will be accepted and well received by the community.

Although I still can’t comment on the subject our research, here are some highlights about the process, and the eventual submission of a paper for Siggraph:

Good ideas need a lot of time to mature. The best projects, those that eventually get submitted as a paper, normally stay around for some years before getting in shape, some are even revisited ideas.

Research doesn’t come out of nothing. We need to put a LOT of effort into reading, understanding and addressing previous work, developing the new idea (from idea to concept, from concept to model, from model to working prototypes), and finally rendering a paper and supplementary material.

It’s also a teamwork. There is no way one can do it all alone. First, there’s simply too many things to be done. Second, people have different preferences. In this type of process, every skill can become handful, such as knowing how to use a soldering iron, design a new circuit board, create good audio recordings, etc.

It seems odd to spend the last two months working 12 to 14 hours every day (including weekends, christmas, new year’s eve and any other holiday) and end up with a simple prototype, 6 to 8 pages of dense text, a 4 to 5 minutes video and some representative images.

At the same time, it’s remarkable how much knowledge and information you can gather, process and absorb in two months, even if you’re applying your skills in new field, one that you’re not very familiar with.

Things that worked for us:

Teamwork. We got along quite well and there were no hustles inside the team. Each one had his own rhythm and also preferences, and the process of task assignment occurred naturally at most times.

File-sharing. We’ve used both version control (svn and git), and Dropbox, for different purposes and at different moments. For most of the basic work, Dropbox is quite handy, because of its ease of use and ubiquiitousity.

Shared writing and pair reviewing. We shared the writing responsibility among three team members, and, in the end, all sections that we initially planned for the paper were written. The reviewing tasks at the polishing stage was done in pairs, sometimes in trios. This was very successful, and I personally think the quality of the final text greatly benefit from this.

Early writing and external reviews. We started to write the papers (we didn’t know at the beginning which ones would make it) very early. Invited reviewers that read the early drafts and other collaborators that knew about the project provided valuable comments.

In the next post I’ll talk about what didn’t work quite so well.
